Quiberon A peninsular with it's own unique micro climate. Long fine sandy beaches, sheltered from the waves of the atlantic, contrast with intimate small creeks and the wild expanses of the coastline where the ocean beats up against the sheer rocks. A great place to taste the sea food and fish from the gulf, or enjoy Boat trips to Belle Ile, Houat or Hoëdic. Of course, you could just lie and soak up the sun. Carnac There are more than 30 prehistoric sites and over 3,000 ancient standing stones near the town of Carnac. This is the biggest megalithic monument in the world, dating back to around 4,500BC. Important safeguard measures were taken in 1991 to help restore the surrounding soils and vegetation from erosion, so some of the 'allignments' are still fenced off from the public. If you want to actually get to the stones, then it's worth calling the Carnac Tourist Office to find out what the current situation is, as it varies from year to year. See www.megalithia.com/brittany/carnac/ for more information. There is a show about the stones in the 'Archeoscope' next to the Alignements du Menec, presented in French, English and German. |
